Jail Birds takes place in the women’s communal area of a prison.  The female inmates are all of a senior age and have all committed crimes to be imprisoned and cared for at the expense of the taxpayer, rather than paying high residential home fees. Now imprisoned, they’re still law breaking by scams, forgeries and producing illegal substances in the prison grounds. The younger prison staff are kept on their toes with the luxury style of living the inmates wish to receive.

THE PRISONERS 60+

Jane - Female, money launderer, and computer addict. Mellow and soft

Mary - Female, never speaks, walks painfully and slowly with a walker.

Lewis - Male, a burglar, jovial and lighthearted and quite active.

Sandra - Female, scientist, illegal distiller, bossy, authoritative, quick with her walk, with a large handbag that she isn’t afraid of using to her advantage.

Sonia - Female, quite harsh, forthright and a ‘butch’ type horticulturist.

Jenny - Female, has elegance with a business-like attitude. Speaks well and sexily with aspects of a dominatrix when required. Previously ran an illegal brothel.

Angela - Female, wheelchair bound, a seamstress. Can be quite bossy.

THE STAFF

Boston, 1959. At the Colonial theatre, the cast of Robbin’ Hood takes their bows on a opening night. Just as the curtain falls, so does Jessica Cranshaw, the profoundly untalented leading lady of the production.  Enter Lt. Cioffi, a cop with a love for musical theater.  He quarantines the cast and crew inside the theater while he searches for clues. But Cioffi doesn’t just investigate the murder, he also offers advice and insight into improving Robbin’ Hood. The musical will open again in 24 hours with a new leading lady, so the clock is ticking to find the killer and put on a killer show.  Who could it be? Carmen Bernstein, the sassy and brassy producer?  Christopher Belling, the company egotistical director?  Georgia Hendricks, the lyricist who replaces Jessica on stage? Niki Harris, the ingenue with a secret?  Everyone is a suspect, and only Cioffi can make sense of the evidence.

PRINCIPALS

Lt. FRANK CIOFFI - a Boston detective who is also very interested in musical theatre. Aside from being exceptionally good at his job, he has also aspired to be a musical theatre performer. Falls in love with Niki. Range Ab-E4, 30s- late 40s

NIKI HARRIS - Pretty, naïve ingenue. Niki is playing a supporting role and is Jessica Cranshaw’s understudy in the show-within-a-show during its Boston tryout. Eager to make her Broadway debut. Range C4-E5,  20s – early 30s

GEORGIA HENDRICKS - Female half of songwriting team. Ends up taking on the leading lady role of the show-within-the-show. Range G3-E5,  40s + similar age to Aaron.

CARMEN BERNSTEIN - The show’s brassy producer, unhappily married to Sidney Berstein, and Bambi’s estranged mother. Highly comical role with a belt voice. Carmen had always belittled Bambi in public, but for a nice reason. Range E3 – E5,  45-65

AARON FOX - The compose of the show-within-the-show.  His songwriting partner, Georgia, is also his ex-wife from whom he’s separated, but still loves.  Range Bb3 – Gb4, 40s similar in age to Georgia.

BOBBY PEPPER - The choreographer and male star of the show within the show. A handsome Gene Kelly type who is the one shining star in an otherwise dire show. He is Aaron’s charming rival and the current boyfriend of Georgia. A strong singer and dancer. Range A3-E4, 30s – 40s, must compliment Georgia in age

CHRISTOPHER BELLING - English director. Camp and funny. Range B3 – E4, 40-60

BAMBI BERNET - Performer in the chorus. Hungry to work her way up to leading performer: she has a contentious relationship with her mother, who insists on calling her by her real name, Elaine.  She changed her name to Bambi because in the Disney movie, hunters kill Bambi’s mother. Range C4-C5, 20s-early 30s

DARYL GRADY - A theater critic from the Boston Globe.  He enjoys using the power he has to make or break shows during their out-of-town tryouts. Non-singing, 30s-40s

JOHNNY HARMON - The Stage Manager of the show-within-the -show. Johnny is gruff but lovable.  He keeps the company in line and on their toes throughout the rehearsal process.  Non-singing role, any age.

OSCAR SHAPIRO - The general manager and sole investor.  An agreeable if slightly gruff man. He is always looking for any angle to find money. Range Bb3-E4, 40s-60s

SIDNEY BERNSTEIN - The co-producer of an out-of-town flop.  Sidney is tough and self-serving. 45-65.

JESSICA CRANSHAW - Fading Hollywood star. A diva, who has no right to be one: she is a terrible singer, dancer and actress who stars in the show within the show and is murdered on its opening night. G4 – D5

In this uproarious comedy, four best friends, each yearning to change their life before it’s too late, return to their beloved Laurelton Oaks, a Wedding venue they know well, in one of their cases, all too well.  With Deedra’s purchase of the stately venue the others rally around her, and the business is ingeniously reimaged as “Occasionally Yours,” an events center for all kinds of fresh, new celebratory gatherings.  With these women so involved in each other’s lives, what could possibly go wrong?
