Job Overview

As Lakewood Technical Director, this individual plays a pivotal role in coordinating and executing the technical aspects of our productions. This multifaceted position involves overseeing various technical elements, such as lighting, sound, set design, and special effects, to ensure seamless and visually compelling performances. The Technical Director communicates and collaborates closely with our directors, designers, and other members of the production team to translate creative visions into technical realities. They are responsible for monitoring production budgets, as well as coordinating the acquisition and construction of set pieces and technical equipment. As Technical Director, this individual is called on to troubleshoot and address any technical challenges that may arise during rehearsals or performances, relating to the physical set. Their role extends to managing and leading the technical crew, ensuring that all elements align with safety standards and regulations.  Ultimately, the job of Technical Director plays a crucial role in bringing our artistic visions to life through the seamless integration of technology and creativity, being able to do so effectively in a fast-paced, summer stock-theater environment.

Compensation

  • $20-$25/ hr

  • Included housing for 22 weeks (within walking distance to the theater)

Responsibilities

  • Report to the Artistic Directors, Supervise Theater Tech 1 and 2, and Technical Interns

  • Read scripts for all productions for the season and be familiar with the play/ musical prior to meeting with the Director

  • Implement and oversee construction methods, schedules (including all builds, load-ins, and strikes), materials, and mechanics for all scenic and technical aspects on all Lakewood Productions

  • Guide production designs with Lakewood's personnel and financial goals in mind

  • Assign, supervise, and execute shop work on scenic construction

  • Engineer specialized scenic construction projects as required

  • Ensure proper function and safety of all moving scenic elements

  • Produce construction drawings as needed

  • Supervise and execute the installation and striking of each set, including rigging and mechanical devices

  • Ensure budgetary control of materials and labor for all productions and assigned projects

  • Monitor and maintain relationships with Lakewood vendors

  • Supervise safety and maintenance of shop, stage, equipment, and storage areas

  • Recommend staff concerns and work with Human Resources, as well as the Executive & Artistic Director to determine appropriate disciplinary action when necessary

Requirements

  • Preferred minimum of Associates Degree or higher

  • Necessary skills: carpentry, drafting, stage crewing

  • Respectful communication with guest designers, co-workers, and volunteers

  • Ability to execute designs on schedule and in budget

  • Strong organizational, directing, and leadership skills

  • Possess a valid state-issued driver's license

  • General understanding and appreciation for the performing arts in our community

  • Full range of physical mobility including walking, sitting, standing, stooping, climbing, carrying, reaching, and manual dexterity is required

  • This position requires availability for working shifts during nights and weekends
