LAKEWOOD NEWS!

SLIP, SLIDING AWAY
...
I don't know where the month of July went. I could blame
"technical difficulties"--I had trouble accessing the
Website. I could blame Lily, the newest addition to my
feline family. She was a gift from my Lakewood pal Midge
Merrill. Lily is a long-haired calico with an extra toe on
each paw. She is adorable, curious, and could run laps
around the energizer bunny. My three huge black male cats
are besotted. I could blame the weather. I certainly did
not spend time learning lines or cleaning my house. And
now, suddenly, the Skowhegan Fair is over, school buses
lurch around corners, leaves are changing color, a large
orange moon hangs low in the sky---and there are only two
plays left in the 2008 Season.

I'LL HAVE A SLIVER
Thanksgiving normally falls the fourth Thursday in
November. This year, you are invited to sit down to an
early feast on the fourth Thursday of August. It will be
"A Nice Family Gathering." It will be the first family
gathering since Dad Lundeen died ten months ago. The
Lundeens had been married for more then 35 years. Dad was a
busy, successful doctor who loved to golf. Mom Lundeen (MJ
CLIFFORD) does not seem to be herself lately but I'm sure
she has prepared a fine meal. The three Lundeen kids will
be there: Michael (STAN PINNETTE) a doctor with a new car
and financial problems; Carl (GABE PINNETTE) a
truck-driving writer, and Stacy (BRANDI WENTZEL)-- she's a,
well, you'll find out after the main course is served.
Michael's wife Jill (LAURIE REYNOLDS) is crying, again.
Jerry Myers (JIM WILLIS), Dad's best golfing buddy, is
Mom's date. Oh, and Dad (JEFFREY QUINN) is also there--a
ghost who can be seen by only Carl. Dad needs a favor. Does
anyone want pie?

TRICK, NO, A TREAT
We close the 108th Season with our third musical, "Bubba's
Revenge." Much of the play takes place in a nightclub on
Halloween. "Bubba's Revenge" reunites the three Honky Tonk
Angels and introduces us to the men in their lives. The
song-laden script includes Islands in the Stream, The Devil
Went Down to Georgia, Spirit in the Sky, Everything is
Beautiful, Rhinestone Cowboy, Can I Have This Dance?, Achy
Breaky Heart, Elvira, and, of course, a rousing,
foot-stompin gospel jubilee.
The production stars BARBIE DEMO, CORY KING, KRISTIN
SEAVEY, BOBBY KENISTON, and --back on the Lakewood stage,
together again-- NANCY CARBONE and BOB LOVELACE
.

JON SALEEBY
The Lakewood community is shocked and saddened to learn of
the recent death of JON SALEEBY. Jon died Sunday August
17th of liver cancer. Jon first appeared at Lakewood in his
signature role as "Dracula" in 1989. He appeared in "A
Streetcar Named Desire," "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest,"
"Everything I Really Needed to Know I Learned in
Kindergarten," "It Runs in the Family," "I Remember Mama,"
"Incorruptible," "Great Expectations," "Cabaret," "The
Foreigner," and "Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde." Jon last appeared
at Lakewood as the mysterious Yankee inn keeper in "The
Ramplings" in 2005.

If he was at home on the Lakewood stage, Jon was truly in
his element on the roof, under the floorboards, or in the
lobby of our grand old theater. Jon was frequently seen
running his hand along the door frames or reverently
touching the columns of the theater. Jon meticulously and
lovingly restored and maintained the Lakewood buldings. A
few years ago Jon described himself as "the resident SOB,
that is, supervisor of buildings at Lakewood." Jon
"literally resurrected the historic buildings from the edge
of disaster as they were rapidly descending into the swamp
on which they were originally built." With his enthusiasm
and his attention to detail, Jon was a major force in
renovating the Lakewood Inn Restuanrant. Jon's work is
commemerated with a brass plaque on a column at the
entrance to the Inn.

A graduate of MCI, Jon did a tour of duty in Vietnam. He
was trained in electronics and as a surveyor. He went to
sea in search of scollops, swordfish, and adventure. An
accomplished woodworker, he fashioned delightfully
unconventional Adirondack-style furniture from alderwood
under the trade name "Alderjon." An aficionado of quality
beer, Jon became a brewmaster. A skilled carpenter, Jon
followed the compass to jobsites large and small. A friend
described his life as whimisical and free-flowing. And
sadly we must add, too short.

Jon leaves behind his family, his many friends, and his
long time companion, Lolly Phoenix.

A Tisket, a Tasket, A VERY SPECIAL BASKET
President and CEO of the famous basket company, Tami
Longaberger made her first appearance in Maine Wednesday
May 28th at a district meeting held at Lakewood Theater and
Inn. Madison resident Barbara Arnold, a Home Consultant of
the company for 24 years, organized the event. Located in
Newark, Ohio, Longaberger is the premier maker of
handcrafted baskets in America. To honor the Theater,
Longaberger created a Tea Basket with green trim and a
brass weave engraved Lakewood Theater 2008. Tami
Longaberger signed 200 of the baskets. They can be
purchased at the Theater for $45.00.

A BAD HAIR DAY....
Also on sale at the box office are Lakewood HOODIES!
Wonderfully soft and cozy, the hoodies are available in yam
and spruce. They are $40.00. We are trying to get Jeffrey
to model one during his curtain speech. So far our efforts
have been futile. He must be afraid they will muss his
hair...

The WINNING CONTINUES...
additional winners in our WIN-PLACE-SHOW drawings include
Alan Nadeau, Sara Shrunk, and June Shaw who each won
tickets for two to any Lakewood Theater performance. Donna
Hendricks and Sharon Vital won tickets and dessert for two.
The Nales of Waterville won dinner and tickets for two at
the the Lakewood Inn Restaurant and Theater.

WORK CONTINUES
A very generous contribution from the BORMAN FAMILY
FOUNDATION has enabled us to continue the restoration of
The Shanty.

A FRESH COAT of PAINT...
Proceeds from the Marti Stevens Trust were used to paint
the front and west side of the theater.
