Lakewood Newsletter 3rd Edition 2008

April 4, 2008

I CAN EXPLAIN
You think the year is young and I am already behind
schedule. Well, I live on Lakewood time--and cat feeding
time, of course. If his breakfast is not in front of him by
8:30 AM Hogan is not happy. And if Hogan is not happy,
well,
you know... Anyway, March is Lakewood Theater audition
month and falls beyond the normal calendar range. And I
wanted to be able to post the casts for each show...and I
was busy and it snowed too much and the month flew
by---alright I missed a month.

MARCH MADNESS
For many of us March has nothing to do with college
basketball. It is all about auditions. A weekend for
musical auditions, a weekend for straight plays, and the
day of call-backs. We avoided the major weather events. We
were unable to avoid the major potholes on Heselton Street.
I guess I traveled the shortest distance, a few blocks.
Nancy Carbone definitely traveled the furthest. Nancy and
husband Andy retired to Florida several years ago. Nancy
took the opportunity to visit her sister and to audition
for "Bubba's Revenge."

YOU CAN GO HOME AGAIN
There was the usual assortment of familiar faces; happily
there were new faces, and there were some faces we hadn't
seen for a while. Lee Davis is returning to the stage after
an absence of 11 years. Lee may be best remembered for his
portrayal of Stanley Kowalski in "A Streetcar Named
Desire." You will recognize the husky voice of local
fitness
instructor Kelly Coughlin. You may remember Kelly from the
blue wig and thigh high boots she wore in "Home is Where
Your Clothes Are" or perhaps as Stupifyin' Jones in "Li'l
Abner." Everyone remembers Barbie Demo--she's back! After
an excursion to the west coast, Nic Jewel is an eastener
again. It does not seem possible but Gabe Pinnette is all
grown up--he was married last June and his understanding
wife Stephanie is encouraging him to return to the stage.
Gabe's newly adopted greyhound Olive Oil accompanied him to
auditions. Playwright and recording artist Bob Lovelace was
always completely at home on stage at Lakewood. Bob
appeared in many of our musicals and in
"Moon Over Buffalo." I think he last appeared in "Bye, Bye
Birdie" in 1999.

FAMILY TIES
Stan Pinnette will direct son Gabe in "A Nice Family
Gathering." Sam Magesh will share the stage with mom
Michelle Sweet in "Marvin's Room." Sharon Buck and hubby
Jason Hilton will be in "Gilligan's Island." The musical
"Guys and Dolls" will unite Jeffrey Johnson and daughter
Kayla, star Lisa Neal and daughter Brittany, and feature
The Grays, Jantha and Irving. Musical director Jeffrey
Quinn will also try to direct son Matthew. The trio of
Kenistons will be on stage throughout the summer. Jantha
Gray and Jayson Smith are siblings. As Lee Davis returns to
the stage, his son Issac will make his debut. At Lakewood,
we're family.

IT COULD HAVE BEEN WORSE
For several days it seemed that every news broadcast
included pictures of another collapsed roof. Jeffrey spent
the month paler than usual and dreading the news that one
of the elderly roofs at Lakewood had succumbed. Lakewood
did not, however, escape the weight of a record snow fall.
The relatively new back deck collapsed and the outside wall
of the electrical room popped off. The intact wall lay on
the snow with the tools still attached. Lamps, lampshades,
chandeliers, and other props meet a frozen fate. With
warmer weather in our forecast, it could have been so much
worse.

SAGE ADVICE
My extremely large, very jealous black cat Sage has found
me. I have twice deposited him rather unceremoniously onto
the floor. I have reprimanded him sternly. He is back. He
has eaten. He has slept. He has no immediate plans. It is
time to wave the white flag. He has himself around the
mouse. A sleek paw is lazily caressing the keyboard. I can
only hope to
does not erase everything.

OUR LOSS
We usually think of the economy in terms of dollars only.
The instability of the current job market, however, is
giving Lakewood Theater a loss that dollars cannot measure.
In mid-June, Ken Ganza is returning to his home state of
Indiana. Ken made his debut at Lakewood last season as
Lawyer Craven in "Sly Fox." He earned a CUE Award for his
supporting role of Hogarth in "Jack, the Ripper, the
Monster of Whitechapel." He was selected as the Best New
Male Actor for the 2007 season. We all anticipated more
fine performances from Ken this season and many of us hoped
for the pleasure of sharing the stage with him. It is our
loss and we regretfully wish him well. A plethora of
interesting roles will follow Ken wherever he goes.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Desi Dow and Bobby Keniston are engaged. Pam and Ted Smith
expect their second child in June. Stephanie and Gabe
Pinnette are expecting their first child in July.

KEEPING PACE
Herb Paradis hosts a weekly program on our local Madison
television channel. Jeffrey was the guest March 26th. The
panel members include Alan Foxwell, Alyse Corson, Maitland
Richardson, and Betty Withee (mother of our own Midge
Merrill.) There was an animated discussion of Lakewood
past, present, and future. The unidentified voices belong
to cameraman Gary Allain and former Lakewood owner Katie
Ouelette.
