LAKEWOOD NEWS!>
Lakewood Newsletter 1st Edition 2007
March 1, 2007
The COUNTDOWN has begun...We are mere weeks, days, and soon, hours from the first day of AUDITIONS. Last Season was one of our most successful, so we began reading plays and planning this Season with a sense of trepidation. We read plays each Saturday night throughout the fall at the home of Susan and Jeffrey Quinn in Cornville. Fortified with Susan's delicious macaroni and cheese and rewarded with something chocolate, we persevered. And we read some wonderful plays!!! We are very pleased to present the schedule for the 107th SEason of Lakewood Theater. Delicious roles are available for 64 men and 56 women. CLOTHES ENCOUNTERS: Unzipped Nonstop Nonsense May 24 - June 2 Directed by Jeffrey Quinn Alan Masters, Mr. Real Estate, knows the selling points of the apartment he is showing to Betty Parker. He does not know that his wife Kathy is also showing the apartment to Betty's husband, Ralph. Neither knows that the shower is faulty and no one knows much about Heinz, the eccentric, bumbling handyman and gardener who raises giant tomatoes. The misdirected shower inadvertantly soaks Betty and Ralph who, scantily clad in the homeowners clothing, are kept out of each other's way by the artful, ridiculous machinations of Alan and Kathy. The walk-in closets conceal more than clothing in this farce of mistaken identities, sexual innuendoes and double meanings. A MUST SEE PROPERTY! (Parts for 3 men and 2 women) THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES: Y'All Come Back Now! Hear! June 7 - June 16 Directed by Mark Nadeau The lovable Clampett family rides onto the Lakewood stage for two weeks of hillbilly hilarity. There's Granny, Jed, Ellie-Mae and Jethro, the Drysdales and Miss Hathaway, a passel of relatives, government people, hi-falutin' society folks, schemin' varmits, and purtty gals. Californ-y will never be the same! Grab your suit and meet us down by the cement pond...WHEE DOGGIES! (7 men and 11 women) SLY FOX: Pure Comedy based on Pure Greed and full of Pure Laughs June 21 - June 39 Directed by Jeffrey Quinn This version of the classic Volpone by Ben Johnson has been adapted by Larry Gelbart of M*A*S*H fame. This rowdy, raucuous reinvention is set in San Francisco in the late 1890's. A rapacious, lecherous miser, Foxwell J. Sly, and his conniving manservant, Simon Able, scheme to separate three opportunists from their fortunes. Sly feigns a terminal illness and tells each of his cronies he is thinking of naming that man as the sole heir to his considerable fortune of gold, stored in a chest at the foot of his bed. To what lengths will each old scoundrel go to sway Sly's thinking? HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO? (11 men and 3 women) ALL SHOOK UP: The Story is New--The Hits are All Elvis July 5 - July 14 Directed by Jeffrey Quinn From playwright Joe DiPietro who brought us the very popular Over the River and Through the Woods and I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change It is 1955. It is a square little town in a square little state in the middle of a square decade. Until he rides into town...on a motorcyle. A guitar-strumming roustabout with a prison resume changes everything and everyone in this hip-swiveling, lip-curling musical fantasy. So "C'mon Everybody" and "Don't Be Cruel." Put on your "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Let Yourself Go" because you "Can't Help Falling in Love" with this Elivis Presley inspired musical. Don your poodle skirts and brush up your white bucks -- TAKE A STROLL DOWN MEMORY LANE. (5 men & 5 women, 2 African-American women, 10 rock n rollin' townsfolk) THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT: The Gift of a Life-Time July 19 - July 28 Directed by Mark Nadeau On this Christmas Eve, Death has come to collect Julia Dowling. When the spritely old lady discovers the Angel of Death has never experienced red and green M & M's, snowflakes, or Christmas dinner with loved ones, she makes him an offer he cannot refuse. In exchange for one more day to "orchestrate" her family, Julia invites Death to join her for the Christmas Day festivities. Julia is soon surrounded by bickering relatives and the parish priest, Father John. Death arrives as Jack Frost bearing gifts from the drug store and the soul of Matthew Harris, a young man who commited suicide that morning. Like an inverted snowglobe, moments of farce, drama, comedy, and even romance colide as the bright holiday melts into not-so-merry reality. GIVE YOURSELF THIS PRESENT. (5 men and 4 women) PG 13 NOBODY'S PERFECT: he stroked her hair...he breathed her name...he touched her lips...he fell off his high heels August 2 - August 11 Directed by Stan Pinnette Leonard Loftus is a bashful statistician. He is recently divorced, the father of teenage DeeDee (she is into Goth), the son of rascally Gus (he has been asked to leave yet another retirement community) and he is a frustrated writer of romance novels. Harriet Copeland is the frustrated editor of Love Is All Around, a publishing house. Tired of the tired manuscripts that clutter her desk, Harriet promotes a conterst for women writers only. Leonard submits a novel under the name Lulabelle Latifa--and wins. Explaining that his aunt Lulabelle is out of country, Leonard meets Harriet to accept the winning check. Their eyes meet--and it is Harlequin time. Anxious to prolong a budding romance, Harriet insists on meeting Lulabelle. Eager to see Harriet again, Leonard dons lipstick and high heels and anounces that Aunt Lulabelle is back in town. ISN'T THAT JUST PERFECT! (2 men & 2 women) CRAZY FOR YOU: The New Gershwin Musical Comedy August 16 - August 25 Direcetd by Jeffrey Quinn Lisa Neal and Joe LaCombe will star in our second musical offering. They are spending the winter months learning to tap dance! A Gershwin extravaganza! Filled with song and dance and hilarious dialogue. An artfully constructed romance. In the 1930's playboy Bobby Childs defies his over protective mother, abandons his clinging fiance, and follows his dreams--westward. Boy meets girl in the Wild West--and learns to tapdance. Memorable songs includes I Got Rhythm, Naughty Baby, I Can't Be Bothered Now, Bidin' My Time, They Can't Take That Away from Me, Nice Work If You Can Get It, Embraceable You, But Not For Me, and Someone to Watch Over Me. A high energy comedy that includes mistaken identities, plot twists, fabulous dance numbers, and classic Gershwin tunes. Who could ask for anything more? YOU ARE CRAZY if you DON'T TRY OUT for THIS ONE. (7 men, 4 women, 10 follies girls and 10 cowboys) JACK the RIPPER: The Monster of Whitechapel: Dally if you Dare, My Dear August 30 - September 8 Directed by Bobby Keniston Jack's reign of terror has begun. Four street women are murdered. Many believe Jack dapples in the black arts and requires a fifth victim to complete the pentacle and ensure a long life. Sir Charles Warren, a totally inept British lord, has been appointed to investigate. His efforts are aided by a Sherlock Holmes wannabe and his wife, a physician, a sufferagette, a royal, and a practicioner of white magic and her cookbook quoting familiar. All try to save the fifth victim, Angela Ellison, a reformed girl of the streets. Because Jack was never apprehended and his identity never known, the playwright offers three possible endings. A random drawing by the stage manager prior to the curtain will determine the ending of each performance. GO AHEAD--TRY OUT-- DON'T BE NERVOUS--JUST STAY in the LIGHT. (6 men and 8 women) (Please do not be put off by the title or the subject matter. The script is clever and amusing and full of wonderful characters. Bobby is very excited to be directing and with his inventive perspective this production promises to be an exciting adventure.) TOM, DICK, and HARRY: Good Things Come in Threes September 13 - September 22 Directed by Jeffrey Quinn. Spend a quiet afternoon with the Kerwood brothers in this latest romp by one of Lakewood's favorite playwrights, Ray Cooney. Tom and Linda Kerwood are in the final stages of the adoption process. The house has been child-proofed and the anxious couple await the arrival of the agency's representative, Mrs. Potter. Linda dashes out for the final touch, a bouquet of fresh flowers. What could go wrong in ten minutes? Dick Kerwood, the lazy schemer but lovable rogue, arrives with the van he borrowed and used to cross the border with a load of cigarettes and brandy--and two illegal Croatian aliens who do not speak English. Harry, the intellectual dreamer, a genius, but thick, arrives with a bag of cadaver parts he plans to sell to a medical school. By the time Linda arrives with the flowers, the aliens are drunk, a persistent policeman is investigating the illegally parked van, the cadaver parts are separated, Tom has two wives and a dead father-in-law, and the score is: Truth 0 White Lies 3. Is that the doorbell? WHY DON'T YOU ANSWER IT? (6 men & 3 women) Auditions will be held at the Margaret Chase Smith Elementary School on Heselton Street in Skowhegan.
